Florida's Hispanic Student Achievement

Celebrating the Success of Hispanic Students

Sunshine State students are exceeding expectations, busting long held myths about education, and proving the founding principle of Florida's Formula for Student Achievement - all children can learn!

Florida has experienced rising student achievement since the enactment of the A+ Plan in 1999.  The Florida Formula for Student Achievement grades schools on an A-F scale - just like students, reading is required in order to advance to the fourth grade, schools and teachers are rewarded for rising achievement, and parents are provided an unprecedented array of educational choices.

Nation's Report Card

Because of Florida's bold, student-centered reforms, Sunshine State students are now leading the nation in educational progress. Hispanic readers in Florida outperform their fourth-grade peers by almost two full grade levels, and our state is fourth in the nation among Hispanic fourth-graders in math in 2013.

In fact, Florida's Hispanic fourth graders are reading as well or better than the average student in 37 states and the District of Columbia, and they are first in the nation among their peers according to the 2013 Nation's Report Card!

Advanced Placement

More Hispanic students are taking rigorous courses to prepare for college.  Since 1999, the number of students taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams in Florida has increased by 404 percent. And best of all, the number of African-American and Hispanic students passing AP exams has more than quadrupled.

Florida has also eliminated the AP achievement gap between white and Hispanic students.

*****

Florida was able to reverse a generation of decline in public schools by creating a system of high expectations and clear accountability that fostered student achievement.

Join us in igniting a movement of reform, state by state, to transform education for the 21st century economy.
